Chapter Thirteen

The campfire crackles in front of me, the flames illuminating the otherwise dim interior of the cave. Few people would know how to build a fire like this in the middle of nowhere, equipped with merely some dried leaves and twigs. But Ren and I used to play in the woods a lot, and we figured that learning how to start fires could be a useful skill.

Luckily, I learned the skill as a child. My prior efforts are paying off, providing some heat in the treacherous cold.

I watch the fire cast shadows on the cave’s wall. Sawyer’s shadow is the biggest. His shadow is imposing, but he’s nothing more than an unconscious werewolf, knocked out cold. I don’t know how to wake him. I’m out of ideas. I’ve tried shouting, poking, talking, and tickling, but he’s not coming back to the realm of the living.

Sawyer isn’t awake yet, but the moon is, and so are the creatures of the forest. Earlier this evening, I thought I’d heard the grunting of a bear from outside the camp. I stiffened the moment those sounds played through the cave. They disappeared soon enough, leaving Sawyer and me alone.

Nic? I have Sawyer with me, but he’s out of it. Anytime would be a good time for you to show. I’m talking to no one. Nicholas hasn’t responded to any of my calls for hours. The last time I heard him, he faintly told me that he was coming. He never came. I should give him more time to show. He will, eventually. Is Carter with you?

I cast more pointless questions into the wind as I wait out this predicament. There are plenty of tourists, hikers, and guides in Hokkaido, though I’m not sure if any of them might venture so deep into the woods that they’d stumble upon us. I continue hoping regardless. Nothing should happen tonight, and by dawn tomorrow, I need to go scouting to search for something. Anything.

I rake my eyes over Sawyer’s body. The top half of his frame is unclothed, just like me. I’d stripped the both of us down and washed our clothes in the stream nearby. The crusted blood clinging to the fabric does little for morale and made the garments more of an inconvenience rather than a help. I’m still cold as hell despite the fire, the chill of the atmosphere biting into my skin. Being half-naked in Hokkaido is hardly a good plan.

Clenching my teeth together, I rub my hands around my arms, curling my toes in response to the cold. Snuggling up against Sawyer’s body grows increasingly tempting, and not because of the mate pull. That’s gone. It was gone when I first found Sawyer and hasn’t returned. I try not to think too negatively about it. It can mean many things. It could be that my inner kitsune is too tired to think about sexy times or that Sawyer’s in too weak a condition to invoke a pull of any sort. It can’t mean that he’s dead.
